I didn’t realize that Ice Cave & Bandera Volcano were actually part of the El Malpais National Monument and Conservation Area. So I was able to check off two destination points in one day; though I have to say, I didn’t spend much time hiking around El Malpais because of the high winds that day. (The photo above was taken on the Zuni-Acoma Trail.)
Even though I spent a very short amount of time here, the El Malpais National Monument and Conservation Area looked like it could be a great place to spend the day – or two or three – exploring.
According to the website, activities include scenic drives and overlooks, short walks, strenuous hikes through rugged backcountry, and caving.
