While I was out for First Friday, I decided to pop into the New Mexico Museum of Art. (Currently, admission is free on Fridays from 5-8 pm.)
The Southwest Sampler exhibition was on display as I walked into the first floor gallery. The Sampler showcased work created in New Mexico by Taos Society Artists, Santa Fe Art Colony members and others. The subject matter, as you may guess, was mostly Indians and the southwest landscape. My favorite piece was probably “Among the Aspens” by E. Martin Hennings.
From there I wandered down the hallway to the new wing where “Con Cariño: Artists Inspired by Lowriders” was on display. I have to say that living here in New Mexico has given me the guilty pleasure of actually enjoying the lowrider culture, so this was a most welcome exhibition. However, an artist talk was about to happen so I couldn’t take it all in as long as I wanted!
After that I ventured into the ‘Alcoves’ area. This section features five artists from New Mexico who show for seven weeks at a time. I was surprised to see some of my friend’s works on display. Congrats John Vokoun!
Lastly I went upstairs to the “Small Wonders” exhibit, a selection of miniscule photographic work, both historic and contemporary that reminded me of some of the collage pieces that I create. Then to top it all off, there were free food and drinks back down on the first floor and a live mariachi band too!
